We invite you to come and share a meal together in community because we desire to see all men from Imago Dei build one anther up in unity, sharing in the work of the great commission. I have detailed the information and reasoning to the basics.
When:
Saturday, March 3: from 9am to 11am.
Where:
Who:
Dr. Liederbach, the Vice President of Student Services and Dean of Students from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS), has graciously agreed to speak on the topic, “The Difference Between Being a Male and a Man”. Beyond his work at the seminary, Dr. Liederbach is a man who deeply loves the Lord, his family, and the raising up of disciples in the local church for the spreading of the Gospel. We are honored to have him join us.
Why:
What comes to your mind when you think of the question: ‘What is the difference between being a male and being a man?’ What if you were to ask this same question to any number of men on the street? What kind of answers do you think you would get? I assume we would find an array of responses. In fact, there are potentially as many answers as there are individuals we might encounter. The current cultural climate will have us believe that there is no real difference between manliness and manhood. However, it is likely we have two competing worldviews in constant battle for our acceptance. So then, where are we to look for guidance on such fundamental issues? Fortunately as Christians we can look to scripture for wise counsel on such fundamental questions.
There are many reasons, but let me add three reasons as to why you should care enough to come and join us:
- Much of scripture speaks to this very issue. From the beginning of the bible in the book of Genesis God has created man and woman (Gen 1:27). The first humans Adam and Eve were created with divine intent (Gen 1:28). Both assigned harmonious responsibilities that fit in perfect conjunction with their created genders. What does this have to do with the difference between being a male and man? For the Christian man, everything. This snippet into just the creation story of Genesis allows us great insight into God’s intent.
- Fellowship and brotherly love are essential to the growth and unity of the church. In and of themselves they are not much, but in addition to all the other blocks we begin to see a beautiful model presented in scriptures of how a whole church body looks. Acts 2:42-47 is one of the better-known places where we see this in practice. As men of Imago Dei we should be striving through the righteous work of Christ to institutionalize such an environment.
- This is a time to come meet and be known by other brothers at IDC. Many of us struggle with this, but there is a certain kind of temptation in not being accountable to anyone else. ‘Individuality’ and the ‘self-made man’ are prized traits in our culture, but as followers of Jesus we have been called to more than just ambition. As members of the body of Christ i.e. the Church – the bible tells to ‘love one another just as Christ has loved us (John 13:33-35): and to ‘bear one another’s burdens’ (Gal.6: 2). In doing so, we might stir up greater affections to the Lord, one another, and good works.
