We’re going to talk about sex today, and specifically the folly of adultery and the wisdom of sex within the covenant of marriage. I think there are a lot of reasons we avoid talking about sex. Here are a few: we think sexual purity and holiness includes avoiding talking about it, we underestimate the gravity and offensiveness of sexual sin — to God and others, we don’t really understand it from a biblical and theological perspective, & guilt and shame. So, whether you avoid talking about it, can only joke about it or get sensitive or embarrassed or defensive talking about it, know this: we are going to talk about sex today. Be prepared for the awkwardness, but be assured that I’m going to stick to the Bible and Proverbs 5. We need to hear this just like Solomon’s son needed to hear this, even and especially if it makes us uncomfortable.

We love to consider our lives morally neutral for the most part – that God cares about whether we have our devotion or go to church or small group but not really about our hobbies or our dating or our jobs or our language or how we parent or how we spend our money. Proverbs obliterates this; there is no part of our lives that He doesn’t want all of. The message of Proverbs is that wisdom isn’t just good advice but is a Person to be followed and a path to be walked. How do we shepherd our hearts wisely?

Today we are in Proverbs 2, and there are really only two main divisions of this proverb. There is the “if you will” section (vv. 1-4), and then the outcome or the “then you will” section (vv. 5-22). There is the admonition to “go hard” in pursuit for wisdom, and the description of the benefits if you do. This is appeal to us. Wisdom is there for the taking. For the sake our time we will consider: The Decision to be made about Wisdom (1-11), The Division that is made by Wisdom (12-19), and The Conclusion to be made about Wisdom (20-22).
